This novel is a set of short stories about the same town, called Mariposa. The stories show the lives of the different characters in the town.
It is well-documented that Mariposa was meant to represent early 20th century Orillia, Ontario. However, the author himself notes that Mariposa could be any number of Ontario towns. For this reason, the book resonates with many readers, as it shows life in small town Ontario.
The book is certainly full of humour, and Leacock's wit and sarcasm are at their finest. He narrates his stories wonderfully, all the time with a comical take on the lives of the various characters of Mariposa.
